The thirty-day test

Run the test properly

  1. Pick a thirty-day window and assume no warning was given. No handover, no phone.
  2. Go through the business function by function and write down what comes to a halt. A halt, not a slowdown — difficulty is not the measure.
  3. Beside each entry, name the person who could have handled it and did not.
  4. Mark every line that stops purely because you are the only one permitted to decide.

What you are holding is a measurement. The length of that list is the size of the job you own. The inverse of it is the size of the asset you own. Most owners find it longer than expected, and find that the bulk of it is permission rather than skill.

Two different things

  • One of them works on the business. Consulting installs process, numbers, seats and systems, and changes how the company runs.
  • The other works on you. Coaching changes how the owner operates — the decisions made, the standards held, the calendar kept, the behaviour repeated.
  • Structural problem, structural answer. When work falls between people because no role owns it, that is consulting.
  • Knowing but not doing, personal answer. When the plan is clear and nothing moves, that is coaching.
  • The expensive mistake. Buying the wrong one, which is the most common waste here. A coach cannot install ownership no seat holds. A system cannot stop you reclaiming work you already handed over.
If this is youWhat would actually help
You have decided already and want agreementA friend, not a paid relationship
Your calendar is not going to changeNothing, until it does
You are after tacticsFree written material, of which there is plenty. Accountability is what is sold here
You have no customers yetSales activity. Structure organises revenue; it does not create it
You are in genuine financial distressAn attorney and a CPA, first and urgently

Seeing yourself in the left-hand column is not a rejection. It is the shortest route to the thing that will help.

No one in Newberry or anywhere can promise you an outcome. Anyone attaching a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.

Why place matters here

Growth is industrial and incremental rather than residential. Distribution and manufacturing keep finding the interstate exits here, while the housing market stays slow and small.

Tight, and the plants set the wage floor. A meaningful share of the workforce commutes in from surrounding counties, which means transportation reliability is a hiring criterion whether stated or not.

Newberry sits almost exactly midway between Columbia and Greenville on the interstate. That position is why distribution keeps landing here and why so many residents earn their living in another county. An owner-dependent business gets worse as the market improves, not better, which is why timing this badly is so common.

The local version

Downtown independents survive because the Opera House keeps evening foot traffic, so restaurants and shops have a reason to stay open past five. Outside town, the business base is agricultural service: equipment dealers, feed suppliers, trucking, custom farm work.

The college and the Opera House give the town a cultural life out of proportion to its size, and the county fair and the agricultural calendar still organize a good part of the year. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.

The constraint here is workers, not customers. Large plants have first claim on a small county labor pool, so a small employer is bidding against industrial wages and shift differentials for the same people.

Frequently asked

Questions people actually ask

Do you work in Newberry?

Yes. Newberry and the rest of Newberry County are inside the regular footprint, along with much of South Carolina.

Coaching or consulting — which do I need?

Consulting changes the business. Coaching changes the operator. If nobody knows who owns the next step, that is structural. If you know what to do and are not doing it, that is not.

Is there a free starting point?

Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first.

What can you promise?

No outcome. Not a figure, not a timeline. What is available is someone who has run the business you are running, will tell you the truth, and will check whether you did what you said.

Make your next move

A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?

You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
